The Cypriot conceptual artist Christos Linou gained a two-year scholarship from the University of Melbourne to research new forms of art and carry out an extraordinary performance: peel 1,200 oranges!
He dresses himself with the orange skins while narrating his own immigration story and honors his parents.
As he says, the oranges constitute one of the most adored remembrances of his childhood. Their aroma in the air, while his mother was peeling them to make the glyko tou koutaliou is a deep rooted memory of his childhood.
“I want to give the message that the color the texture and our epidermal image have no importance because as every orange hides inside the same flesh and juice as all other oranges, so do we people, no matter our appearance and cultural origin, are able to love, feel pain, cry and hope. In essence we are all the same,” the Greek-Australian artist told Neos Kosmos.
Naked Peel will take place at D11 @ Docklands Gallery: Shop 3, 427 Docklands Drive, Docklands. The performance will be held on Saturday, October 5 between 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. The exhibition will run from 7 to 12 October (Mon – Sat 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.)
