As it is known, the economic crisis in Greece has created a new wave of immigration to Australia. Especially the city of Melbourne constitutes an attraction for many new-coming Greek immigrants. These families face many difficulties in adjusting to their new life.

However, keeping in touch with the Greek language is for them a priority, for the additional reason that many of them are thinking of returning to Greece as soon as the situation improves. So, there is the need for their children to be able to integrate in the schools in Greece, without having problems with the language.

The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, in response to these demands, ideas and proposals, and wanting to support these Greeks, decided to establish a school which will be exclusively addressed to students who were born in Greece and whose native language is Greek. With teachers from Greece and school books used at Greek schools, these children will be given the opportunity to maintain the level of Greek they have already acquired and promote their knowledge of the language as well.

In addition, the Community’s ambition is for this school to be a meeting place for the new-coming immigrants, give the opportunity to both students and their parents to meet and interact. It is highly important that the cost of the lessons is low, as the Greek Community understands the financial difficulties of the Greeks that only recently came to Australia.

The Educational Committee of the Community has created a questionnaire in order to get to know the number of families interested and to finally find the most suitable structure for this new attempt concerning the location and the schedule of the new school.
