ellines-australia_elexionThe Greek presence in the Australian parliament may be less after Saturday’s election. It is almost certain that Steve Georganas, MP of the Labor Party in the Hindmarsh seat of Adelaide, will not be elected.

The Greek Labor MP, Maria Vamvakinou was elected in the seat of Calwell in Victoria.

Another Greek MP, Sophia-Mirabela Panopoulou will have to wait a few days to see whether she will keep her seat in Indy of Victoria. She was  Shadow Minister for Industry and is believed to be given the same ministry in the new government.

In the Senate, Nick Xenophon was triumphantly reelected in South Australia and as the Coalition does not ensure the control of the Parliament, his vote will be necessary to get bills passed.

Senate Athanasios Sinodinos, who has contributed significantly to the return of the Coalition in power, was also reelected in New South Wales.

Another expat who may be elected as MP, is the Liberal candidate Nicholas Varbaris in Burton, Sydney. Varvaris has been serving as a municipal councilor since 1999.
