Greek Studies Degree in Macquarie University

ptyxioIn the context of enhancing the knowledge of Greek, the Macquarie University of New South Wales in Australia is establishing a degree in Greek Studies.

This will be the first full degree that will be offered by a high educational institution of Australia, as noted by those responsible in the University.

The studies will last three or four years and the degree will be probably offered from the year 2015.

“Its duration will be as much needed for a degree with a full curriculum, around three to three and a half years,” Dr. Elisavet Kefallinou, Head of the Modern Greek Department in the Macquarie University noted.

“The core of the courses will be the Greek language, ancient and modern. History, mythology, courses about the Greek era, the Byzantium and modern Greece will be given as well,” she added.

A basic element that the academic authorities are examining and which they want to have as part of the degree is to send the students for about six months to a Greek university to acquire more direct contact with Greece and the Greek language.

The official announcement will be made in the near future and after the technical processing for the final form of the degree program has been completed. Macquarie University offers Greek in the Department of International Studies and will be shortly introduced in Global Studies degree as well.

“In that way, when the course introduces such degrees as obligatory, then it is upgraded by its nature. It obtains glamor and prestige and the student who gets it, is thinking seriously, he thinks that he will be in direct contact with Greece and the Greek reality, and as a result the course does not seem anymore as Community Language, which ranks it at an inferior role and level,” Kefallinou explained.
