The UNSW Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences is organizing an International Symposium paying tribute to Constantine Cavafy, from June 18 to 20. For the anniversary of 150 years since his birth and 80 years since his death, the University of New South Wales has invited several scientists from around the world to give speeches and discuss the cultural significance of the work of the acclaimed Greek poet of the 20th century and why there is such interest in his poetry today.
The academic symposium on Cavafy will be attended by local and internationally renowned academics, including Dr Maria Boletsi from the University of Leiden, Dr. Anthony Drakopoulos from the University of Sydney, Associate Professor Karen Emmerich from the University of Oregon, Professor Gregory Jusdanis from Ohio State University, Professor Brasidas Karalis from the Modern Greek Literature Department of Sydney University, Sir Nicholas Laurantos, Dr Dimitris Papanikolaou from Oxford University, Dr. George Syrimis from Yale and Professor Michael Tsianikias from Flinders. The scholars will discuss and analyze different aspects of Cavafy’s work and the great interest in his poetry in recent years.
Edward Morgan Forster said about Cavafy that he sees the world from a slight angle. “It seems that the angle resonates more than ever,” Associate Professor Nicholas Doumanis from the University of New South Wales and coordinator of the event said.
After two days of the academic symposium, on June 20 two events will be open to the public. The first is a workshop for students of secondary schools in Sydney, “Why we should read Cavafy now more than ever.” This workshop under the supervision of professors Boletsi, Emmerich and Syrimis will be held at 1-2:30 p.m. at the University of New South Wales, Kensington Campus.
The second event is, Cavafy: Public debate, which will take place at the John Niland Scientia Building at Kensington campus of the University of New South Wales, at 6.30 p.m. and invites the public to attend and discuss the poetry and heritage of Cavafy with a team of experts.
The events are organized not only to present the work of one of the greatest poets of the world, but also to indicate the university’s interest and commitment to research on Greek Studies.
