MP Nile Responds to Turkey About Genocide

armenian-genocide-02-jpgNew South Wales MP, Reverend Fred Nile, chose a mild tone to present his arguments in response to a recent attack by the Consul General of Turkey in Australia.

Rev. Nile was the recipient of an acute attack on the Turkish side, as it was he who tabled a resolution in the NSW Senate concerning the recognition of the genocide of Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians by the Ottoman Empire.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the specific resolution and talked about “hate speeches that have nothing to do with actual historical data.”

Rev. Nile argued that the Ottoman Empire is responsible for the genocide, and not modern Turkey, while he invoked the Australian historian Geoffrey Robertson, whose study showed that  there was indeed a genocide.

Among others, he stressed that “Winston Churchill spoke of a holocaust preplanned and executed for political reasons… For us, this is not just a matter of history. It is the obligation towards the victims, their descendants and defense of the international law. And until these genocides are acknowledged we will not feel at peace.”

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, this very resolution which is full of inaccuracies and exaggerations has been adopted without any control. Moreover, it was highlighted that “such actions affect the warm relations between Australia and Turkey.”
