Political Reactions To St Nicholas Church Soundproofing

ThermartonA storm of political reactions have been triggered by the federal government’s decision to grant five million dollars to soundproof St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Thebarton of Adelaide, which belongs to the Greek Orthodox Community of Adelaide and South Australia.

The Opposition together with the Greek-Australian Independent Senator for South Australia, Nick Xenophon, both seem to characterize this amount as excessive and is asking the government for an explanation.

Infrastructure Minister, Anthony Albanese, stated, “The noise imprint in Adelaide has grown and therefore this church under the legislation is eligible for insulation…And can I say this… it’s similar to the programs funded by the Howard Government.”

The church is in Labor MP Steve Georganas’ marginal electorate of Hindmarsh, but following a redistribution it will fall into the seat of Adelaide from the 2013 election. Adelaide is held by Employment Participation minister Kate Ellis, the Herald Sun reports.

“Two churches in the area, the Queen of Angels Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George, have been funded with three and 3.5 million dollars respectively. We have decided, that the soundproofing of St. Nicholas Church will be made with the lowest cost possible,” explained Albanese.

In the meantime, according to the Australian press, it is indicated that the police have been conducting surveys for the church priest, Father Prokopios Kanavas, after last year’s Israeli police investigation in connection with an allegedly forged character reference.
