All Open Windows Opens Doors Too

Image.ashxShortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, in the category of community relations, is Greek-Australian Hariklia Heristanidis’ book, All Windows Open and Other Stories (Clouds of Magellan).

It is the first complete work of Heristanidis, who wants to present Greek culture seeking her identity in an Australian environment with Greek colors.

Her book is written in English and consists of seven short stories, whose main heroine is Chrissie, a female of Greek descent, and like Hariklia, a children of immigrants, who’s living in an “odorless world”, since she lacks the sense of smell.

She never had the chance to smell tzatziki or dolmadakia (stuffed grape leaves) made by her mother, nor any other scent that fills the air in any Greek home.

However, our heroine manages to exploit her anosmia and use it instead as a tool to develop her other senses. The author highlights that she has learned a lot through her heroine. The main axis of the plot is Chrissie’s search for the right partner. The color of the novel is purely Greek.

The NSW Premier’s Literary Award, Community Relations Commission is accompanied by a $ 20,000 cash prize.
