Australian Officials in Greece for Anzac Day

Anzac-memorial3A delegation of Australian MPs, mayors and other officials has departed from Australia in order to visit the island of Lemnos in Greece, where commemoration of Anzac Day will be held.

Anzac refers to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during World War I, which was formed in Egypt in 1915 and operated during the Battle of Gallipoli.

Head of the 21-member delegation is the Greek Australian MP in Victoria, former minister and current President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA), Giannis Pantazopoulos, while the Greek Australian MPs Jenny Mikakos and Lee Varlamis are participating.

Varlamis stated that the Australian MPs will visit not only Lemnos but Macedonia and other Greek regions where Australians have fought during the World Wars I and II.

“Joint Greece-Australia fights during the two World Wars should be shown off,” Pantazopoulos pointed out and added: “The Battle of Crete is not the only one, and it should be also shown off.”

Pantazopoulos and many other Australian MPs exercise pressure so as Lemnos will be included in the commemoration for the 100 years from the Gallipoli Campaign that will take place in April 2015.
