Greek Scientist Warns of Global Cereal Disease Risk

stariThe planet will be threatened by global wheat and food shortage if the amount of money allocated for the creation of new, resistant seeds isn’t doubled, claims Dr. Darren Kriticos, a scientist of Greek descent, who works for Australia’s national science agency CSIRO (The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization).

Kriticos wrote a study on the prevention of diseases of cereals. The disease that affects wheat in Uganda has appeared also in the Middle East, he said.

“The issue is not whether the disease reaches Australia, but when. And we must be ready to face it,” he stressed, adding that “if the wheat producing countries around the world don’t cooperate in this sector and don’t invest 50 million dollars in research, there is a high risk.”

“There is a risk that the earth will face even food shortage”, Kriticos noted.
