Gillard Opens Aussie Door to Golden Dawn

golden_378_355The daily newspaper of Melbourne in an extended article titled, Ban sought on far-right Greek party, refers to the possibility of the neo-Nazi Greek political party Golden Dawn opening a local office in Melbourne.

The newspaper relied on data from relevant reports of the British newspaper Guardian, of the party’s effort to gain international support. The Immigration Minister Brendan O’Connor, has been sent a petition calling for Golden Dawn MPs to be blocked from entering Australia.

However, as Prime Minister Julia Gillard recently told Neos Kosmos, her government will not stop the group despite concerns that the party aims to exploit Greek-Australians who are disenchanted with their homeland government’s austerity measures.

Golden Dawn declined to comment on the Australian newspaper, but Professor Anastasios Tamis, explained to the Australian Channel TEN-which has also been dealing with the issue- that the Golden Dawn campaign in Australia is actually targeted.

“There is a number of fairly conservative people here, ex-royals, former supporters of dictatorship, such categories of people who have been disappointed from what is happening in Greece right now and try to express it. Those people feel betrayed by Greece’s attitude over the issues of FYROM, Cyprus and Northern Epirus. People who do not see the fascist element of Golden Dawn and that this far-right party is in fact trying to exploit them,” Tamis noted.
