Greece’s Best Grabs Aussie Headlines

Dan-20130328113500875482-620x349Despite its crushing economic crisis, an avalanche of austerity measures and constant images of protests, strikes and riots, Greece remains an irresistible lure to many around the world, and some of its best features have been showcased in Australian media.

Writer Daniel Scott from The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, produced a two-page travel story under the headline Remember the Titan, putting what’s still good about Greece at the forefront.

He takes readers through the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, Plaka and Syntagma to watch the changing of the Evzones and praises the greatness of ancient Athens along with the amazing architectural monuments.

But he also notes the “swift, modern subway system,” which is occasionally closed by strikers, and after a brief flashback to postwar Greek history, says that Athens as a modern tourist destination, is “tranquil, uncrowded, as culturally and historically magnetic as ever and represents excellent value, particularly for Australians.”

He also added that, “Visitors from Germany, with which Greece has been vigorously disputing economic bailout terms, are conspicuous by their absence.” He also talks about the National Archaeological Museum as well as the Benaki Museum,  and ends his last night in Athens on Lycabettus hill, to visit the brilliant-white chapel of Agios Georgios.

The report is laden with pictures of attractions such as the Parthenon, Monastiraki, Acropolis Museum and of course the Caryatids.
