Greek Taught in Australian Schools

imagesThe Ambassador for Greece to Australia Charalambos Dafaranos, accompanied by Vassilios Tolios, the Consul-General of Hellas in Sydney, together with Vassilios Gogas, Education coordinator of Australia and New Zealand, visited the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) headquarters in Sydney to celebrate a decision to include teaching Greek in the public schools.

The meeting was arranged by the Greek Ambassador, in order for the Greek side to give thanks to ACARA, for including Greek as the second language in the Australian national curriculum. ACARA included Greek in “national priority” languages, characterized as a Heritage Language and not as an Ethnic Language.

Dafaranos said that this is a decision of historic importance for the future of the Greek language in Australia and its cultivation. Moreover, students who do not have any Greek cultural backgrounds will be given the opportunity to widen their horizons and get to know one of the world’s greatest cultures. Tthis initiative will, as well, strengthen the multicultural nature of the Australian society, officials said.

The National Curriculum project will be ready by next May for public consultation. The aim of the Australian side is, after the consultation, the adoption of the program by the end of the year, having taken into account the suggestions and comments that are to be received.
