Calombaris Pays For Stealing Mr. Whippy’s Name

calombarisThe ice cream “conflict” between Greek Chef George Calomparis and Mr. Whippy ended with the well-known chef paying $4,000 by order of a court verdict.

A few months ago, he had named an ice cream served in his restaurant St. Katherine’s, Mr Whippy,  the same name as that manufactured by a rival business, Mr. Whippy, owned by  Stan Gordon.

The first reaction of Gordon against the chef was to send a legal letter informing him that the name Mr. Whippy belongs to his company and he should change the name of his own ice cream since he violated the law.

Calomparis refused at first and claimed that the real Mr. Whippy was not popular or well known and kept serving his own ice cream under the name of his competitor, who owned the copyrighted name. Gordon said he would give the settlement to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Calombaris is a judge on an Australian cooking show contest, owns seven restaurants in Melbourne and one in Mykonos and was named Chef of the Year in 2008. He draws on his Greek and Cypriot heritage for his recipes.
