Tasmania’s Greeks Aid Wildfire Victims

tasmaniaTasmania’s Greeks’ are offering help for the victims of wildfires that spread across the island state south of Australia. According to the head of the Greek community of Hobart, John Fotakis, Greeks came immediately to rescue the fire victims, in any possible way.

“Some of them brought their boats, to take the victims away from the fire inferno, while some others contributed voluntarily to the firefighting process and donated a lot of money, clothes and food,” he said.

Fotakis also said that in Tasmania there are about 5,000 Greeks, many of whom had properties in the area where the fire broke out but it was believed they weren’t affected.

“The Greek community is cooperating with the local authorities and competent services to provide its aid in any way,” Fotakis added. Hobart’s Greek community offered its hall to the rescuers to relieve the victims.
