Greek Pillar Story in Melbourne

pillar storyMinister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship, Nicholas Kotsiras, launched the Greek Precinct Story Pillar giving everyone the opportunity to discover the history of Greek immigrants in Australia and the ways they managed to become a strong power in the area.

Kotsiras said: ‘The Greek Cultural Precinct is one of Melbourne’s most iconic areas and a living example of how migration shaped Victoria.”

“Lonsdale Street has been the spiritual heart of Victoria’s Greek community for decades. The restaurants, cafes and music stores that line the precinct created a home away from home for many Greek migrants, many of whom came to Melbourne after World War II.”

Pillar Story is the final piece of the Precinct Enhancement Fund of 10 million dollars given by the Victorian Government in cooperation with City of Melbourne and the Chinese, Italian and Greek communities to promote and protect the idea of the popular cultural precincts of Melbourne city.
