Grandson Faces Court Over Grandparents’ Killing

bb0ef6be872668ea493adb9e592058dd66c9a4cfRoss Konidaris, of Sunshine West, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of arson, after he was arrested Dec. 26.

The accused, with a shaved head and in a tight, black short-sleeved T-shirt, sat silently in the dock in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Dec. 26 throughout the hearing. Flanked by two guards behind a protective screen, Konidaris nodded when the magistrate asked if he understood that he would be remanded in custody until a committal mention on April 18.

His lawyer told Magistrate Ian Watkins that it was Konidaris’ first time in custody and asked that he receive a psychiatric evaluation as soon as possible.

Several members of the slain couple’s family sat at the rear of the courtroom for the brief filing hearing, one man clutching his face and sobbing. The family members declined to comment as they left the court following the brief hearing.

Triantafillio and Stavroula Konidaris’ bodies were found in their burning house on Morven Street, Yarraville, in Melbourne’s inner west, Dec. 22,  with police declaring the deaths and the blaze to be suspicious.

Detectives arrested Konidaris in the same suburb on Dec. 26.
