Greek-Australians Protest Albanian Census

protestaneshkupThe Panepirotic Federation of Australia strongly protested what it said were falsified results of the 2011 Census according to data given by the Albanian Institute of Statistics. In a statement, the Federation said the results showed there were discrepancies in the process.

The Federation highlighted that official results declared that 83.2% of the population declared Albanians, some 2,329,715 people but that only 0.87% or 24,361 identified themselves as Greeks. Also, only 6.75% Christian Orthodox were recorded,  10.03% recorded as Catholics (a percentage that has not changed since 1900) while 56.7% was recorded as Muslims.

Taking into consideration that Greece issues approximately 300,000 Special ID card homogeneous, that the former Greek Consul of Korytsa, Theodoros Oikonomou, spoke of  30,000 inhabitants of the region having declared themselves Greeks and that up until recently the Orthodox percentage in Albania reached a 30%, said the data presented by Albanian officials was false.
