Australia Squeezes Traveling Pensioners

PENSIONSFrom January 2013, new measures are going to be imposed on pensioners and those who receive social allowances, who travel abroad.

The Australian Government is tightening the rules for people who travel overseas while receiving income support payments and family assistance.

This change recognizes that many Australians have strong family and friendship connections overseas, while ensuring that people of working age who are receiving Government payments are in Australia participating in the community and preparing to return to work if they can.

Under the change, the amount of time individuals can travel overseas while continuing to receive income support payments will be reduced from 13 weeks to six weeks, effective from January 1, 2013.

The Government’s main argument is that if the payment time of pensions is reduced, many millions will be collected to be offered to the lowest sections of society.

“It is true that, from January 1, 2013, the allowance payment rules will change. However, pensioners will receive their pensions during their stay abroad,” the Humanitarian Settlement Services Manager said.
