Megalogenis Receives Walkley Award

Greek-Australian journalist George Megalogenis, political commentator, author and former senior feature writer at The Australian, was awarded for long-form journalism for his book The Australian Moment, at the 57th annual Walkley Awards held at the Parliament House in Canberra.

Megalogenis has written books about immigrations’ contribution to Australia’s development. His writing draws on the personal experiences of someone who grew up in an immigrant working family.

He expresses his disappointment of the government and opposition’s position regarding the greater Australia through immigration, since they are concerned about the political cost. The journalist reveals that the majority of Australians did not want Greek immigrants in Australia in 1951, according to a poll.

In his book The Australian Moment, he traces the key economic reforms and brilliant moments of collective instinct that opened Australian society to the immigration of capital, ideas and people to just the right degree. He pinpoints the events that shaped Australia’s good fortune and national character, and corrects our selective memory where history has been misunderstood or misdirected by self-interested political leadership.
