Critic, Professor, Kostas Kastanas, Dies

Kostas Kastanas, a well-known professor, literary critic and researcher of Greek-Australian Literature, has passed away at 81 years old.

Born in Brisbane in 1931, Kastanas pursued his studies on English Literature and obtained his doctorate from British University. He was a professor in English Department of University in Queensland where he was also the director of Australia Studies Center as well as President of the Australian Studies Association.

He never forgot his Greek origin, though his ancestors had moved to Australia in 1890. Late in his life,   Kastanas decides to learn the Greek language and study Greek culture and be devoted to Greek-Australian Literature.

Kastanas broadened his horizons regarding Greece by being an active member in Brisbane’s Greek Community, taking part in Greek radio programs, various groups established by him such as the Cultural Association Dionysios Solomos,  lectures and theater. He wound up dedicating his life to the promotion of Greek Culture, not only in the Greek Community but also around Australia.
