Sydney’s Greek Film Festival: Laughs and Tears

Nisos 2, Larissa Confidential and Tied Red Thread – they all have one thing in common. Due to the overwhelming sales and the sold-out cinemas, all three films will be screening again during the Greek Film Festival’s by popular demand screenings Nov. 5-7 at Palace Norton Street Cinemas Leichhardt, in Sydney.

From comedies to escape reality to a drama that represents reality of the civil war in Greece, the films couldn’t be any more different. “They were amongst our most popular screenings and the films the public continuously request we screen againm” said Nia Karteris, Chair of the Greek Festival of Sydney.

From Stratos Makridis’ Larissa Confidential, a riotous comedy about two villages, a big wall, biological wastewater, bribes and dirty money, to the hunt for buried treasure in Antonis Aggelopoulos’ Nisos 2, a sequel which brings back the same characters from the original Nisos in their search for the treasure trove, both films offer lots of laughs.

Amongst the popular comedies was also a drama about the most bitter and taboo chapters in Greece’s history – the post-World War II civil war. Kosta Haralabous’ Tied Red Thread depicts a film of personal pain and sacrifice over a murder and vulgarity between the armed forces and the leftists who have not declared their allegiance after the signing of the Varkiza Treaty between the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Secretary of the Greek Communist Party.
