The Mediterranean Comes to Leichhardt

Cyprus one day and Larissa the next; it’s all happening in Leichhardt this coming weekend as Palace Cinemas Norton Street travels to the Mediterranean. Commandaria and haloumi from Cyprus, tsipouro and tiropites (cheese pies) from Larissa, take your senses on a journey with the aromas and taste of food and drink and through the sound and visual experience of film.

First stop is Cyprus on Saturday Oct. 20. Prior to the 4 p.m. screening of Elias Demetriou’s Fish N Chips and presented by the Women’s Committee of the Cyprus Community of NSW, cinema goers will have the opportunity to drink the Cypriot wine Commandaria and try haloumi among a great spread of other great tastes available.

Fish N Chips follows Andy, a hard-working immigrant in London, as he deep-fries his way into oblivion until his idealized image of ‘home’ sends him back to his native Cyprus. Having slaved away for others his entire life, he finally opens his very own chip shop. But his dream turns into a nightmare, as he seems to have overlooked one small detail: Cyprus just isn’t London.

On Sunday Oct. 21 and prior to the 4.15 p.m. screening of Stratos Makridis’ Larissa Confidential, the second stop is Larissa. Presented by the Australothessalian Benevolent Federation of Sydney and NSW Karaiskakis Ltd, taste the traditional savory flavors and the authentic Greek tsipouro aperitif that the region of Thessaly is famous for.

Then watch as two villages divided by a large wall have lived side-by-side in perfect harmony until the Kallikratis plan to merge them and all hell breaks loose.  A big-time journalist dies, the establishment of a biological waste water treatment plant causes further friction, the minister accepts bribes, dirty money is flying around like pollen in spring, and the Financial and Economic Crime Unit sticks its nose where it doesn’t belong. State and private interests are crossed and one nasty surprise follows the next. After much calamitous dealings, it somehow comes together in the end.

“If you liked [the box office hit] I Love Karditsa (GFF 2010), there’s no reason you won’t enjoy this outrageously crude mainstream comedy.” Athens News

Larissa Confidential has no English Subtitles
