No Small Potatoes: Moraitis’ Company Turns Chinese

Nick Moratis’ success story

The giant Chinese company Chevalier Group is likely to become a main supplier of fruit and vegetable supermarket Woolworths and Coles who monopolize the Australian market, and in the process will obtain the majority of shares in the Moraitis Group, founded 55 years ago by Nick Moraitis, who still owns the business.

Moraitis became popular across the country when his won the legendary Melbourne Cup race. When he set up the company he used to distribute potatoes. That led him to grow and supply Australian supermarkets with fresh fruits and vegetables.

The last five years the company’s turnover has doubled. The company is being operated by Paul Moraitis, one of his sons. The family is a classic saga of hard work and the Greek entrepreneurial spirit.
