South Australian Member of Parliament Steve Georganas has pledged to be fair but firm in his new role as Second Deputy Speaker, advancing after the Speaker, Peter Slipper, resigned over a sex scandal which set off a reorganization in the body.
The Labor Member for Hindmarsh has been occupying the Speaker’s chair at Parliamentary debates as part of the House of Representatives Speakers Panel since 2007. He moved up to his new role on Oct. 10 by a vote of 73-71.
Georganas is the first Australian politician of Greek origin to be elected as a Second Deputy Speaker. Before becoming a politician he was a taxi driver. During his tenure he has dealt with expatriate, Greek and Cypriot issues, often visiting both countries.
