Greek-Australians Make the Best Cricket Balls

The best cricket team in Australia doesn’t play the game but provides its most essential piece of equipment: the ball. Greek and Greek Cypriot employees of the Kookaburra Company, a manufacturing cricket ball factory provide the balls to all cricket teams over Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

With 30 years experience, the Greek manufacturing team has received many compliments from the best cricket players all over the world. The great-great-great granddaughter of Alfres Grace Thompson, founder of the company recognized their special skills and commitment to her company.

The team’s members include: Androula Christodoulou, Andrew Georghiou, George Kardaris and his wife Irene, Maria Lygouris, Bill Milionis, Andreas and his brother Philip Philippou, Nick Siacolas, Nick Smirnios and Harry Theocharous. Their hands make and polish and create the best cricket balls in the world, using cork, leather and some yarn.

The members are a big family in many ways and many are relatives or friends of long standing. When Georghiou first came to Australia, he brought all the others, and cricket players are glad of it.
