Victoria Cuts Interpreters for Greek Language

Jenny Mikakos a Member of Parliament for the Labor party in the Northern Metropolitan Region said that the Baillieu Government of Victoria has “outrageously” reduced the number of interpreters available to Greek citizens.

Mikakos said this will affect the lives of patients at the Northern Hospital, who will be forced to ask their family members for help in communicating with doctors. The decision will mostly affect elderly people, who are not capable of communicating with their doctors in English for sensitive matters concerning their health.

“I am concerned that this may impact on patients’ ability to make informed decisions about their medical care as well as their understanding of their medical condition and treatment. There is a clear pattern of neglect emerging from this Government for people from disadvantaged backgrounds including migrants and our elderly.” Mikakos told Neos Kosmos daily.
