Immigration Minister Bowen Greek Consulate’s Honoree

The General Consulate of Greece to Melbourne in cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria are organizing an event on Sept. 28 at the premises of the community to honor the Australian Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen.

The event will take place within the trans-national agreement to be signed by the two countries making it easier for tourists and visitors to also be able to find work in Australia, which this year has deported 29 Greeks who showed up without being able to meet strict guidelines for staying.

“It is an honor for us that Mr. Bowen will attend the event in such critical times, when contacts have begun about the trans-national agreement for the tourist/holiday visa alterations permitting its holder to get a job. Our community encouraged the restarting of the negotiations and we hope that the already existing cultural, economic, historic and social ties between Greece and Australia will become stronger. Mr. Bowen’s visit confirms that the Greek community holds a strong place in the multinational society of Australia. We hope the signing of the agreement will come soon,” said Vassilis Papastergiadis, President of the Greek Orthodox Community.
