MP Georganas Wants Made in Australia Logo to Prod Telstra

A move by Australia’s leading provider of cell phones Telstra to transfer jobs offshore has prompted Greek-Australian Labor MP Steve Georganas to renew calls for an Australian Operated logo for the service industry. Much like the “Australia Made” trademark the service industry logo would encourage consumers to opt for locally operated services such as banks, telcos and energy company if they could identify local products, he said.

“You can already walk into a supermarket and see immediately if the fruit you’re buying comes from Angaston or Argentina. But when you sign up for a new bank or phone account, there is no way of knowing if it will be serviced by someone in Melbourne or Manila,” he said. Georganas said that enabling consumers to identify a locally-run service provider will drive valuable traffic to Australian businesses.

Telstra Corporation Limited is a telecommunications and media company, building and operating telecommunications networks and marketing voice, mobile, internet access and pay television products and services, according to the company.
