Helen Kostadinos, 68, Holds 60 World Weightlifting Records

Despite her age, Greek-Australian champion Helen Kostadinos, 68, keeps breaking world records in weightlifting. She has just returned from France where she took part in a competition and broke three records in three categories. The former record holder of these categories was Kostadinos!

She said that, “When I enter the stadium, I feel a strong power encouraging me. I feel like I’m able to do anything. The others get surprised by my achievements and I get surprised by myself. I think it’s an inner power, spiritual I guess, that won’t leave me as long as I’m alive.”

In two years, Kostadinos enters her 70′s, and as a result, a new weightlifting category. “Sports officials should give more space to this age group,” continued the Greek-Australian champion. “People are as young or as old as they feel and thus, our age should not block what one wants and is able to do.”

A few years ago, the champion had a serious back injury but instead of stopping her training, she tried even harder and is now able to lift more than double her weight. She weighs 61 kilos but lifts 132!  She said the key to her success is exercising three times a day, walking briskly half an hour, avoiding fatty foods and eating sensibly.
