Greek-Australian Christians Raised $320,000 to Support Greece

Greek Orthodox churchgoers around Australia raised a great deal of money to help their beloved Greece struggling with crisis. Suffice it to say that when it is about Greece, Greeks living abroad become really generous.

The fundraiser Greece Appeal, as it is called, was organized by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. It took place in every Greek Orthodox Church during the Sunday service on June 10.

According to an article in the Greek Orthodox Archodiocese’s newspaper To Vima tis Eklissias, the money has already been sent to the Archdiocese of Greece and it will be distributed all over Greece. It will be going to the Greek soup kitchens organized by the churches.

Neos Kosmos reports that in New South Wales, the faithful donated $129,483.75; in Victoria they donated $139,091.26; in South Australia they donated $26,113; and in Queensland $11,230.

Around $90,000 of funds raised will be offered to the Archdiocese of Crete.
