Australian Labor Party Wins- Greek MP Jennifer Kanis Elected in Melbourne

Head of Australian Labor party, Daniel Andrews, announced yesterday that his party defeated the Greens in its Melbourne constituency. Having counted about 70% of the votes, Labor candidate of Greek descent Jennifer Kanis appears to have won 750 votes more than Greens’ candidate Cathy Oke.

Despite being moderate in their campaign action, the Labor party informed media and their voters that they are ahead of Greens’ Oke even though they have received 3% less votes than in the previous election. Moreover, about 20% of Australian voters abstained from voting altogether.

Asked which will be her next move as an MP, Mrs Kanis replied that she is going to check into Australian government’s accounts and expenses. As for Greek voters of Kanis, she stated that she thanks them all from the bottom of her heart. “I assure them that I won’t forget what I promised them and that I’ll make all necessary changes,” she continued.

Jennifer Kanis is the sixth Greek member of the Australian federal parliament. The other five are Nikos Kotsiras, Giannis Pantazopoulos, Andrew Katos as well as Lee Tarlamis and Jenny Mikakos.
