Australian Businessmen Show Interest In Greek Gold of Thrace

According to the Australian Ambassador to Greece, Jenny Bloomfield, gold found in the broader Thrace region (northern Greece) has aroused the interest of Australian businessmen for future investments in the country.

In a meeting she had with Greek Minister Costas Hadjidakis, the Australian Ambassador stressed her fellow countrymen’s interest with regards to investments in Greece.

Even though no further details and data concerning possible investors were announced by Mrs Bloomfield, the media assume that it might be an investment similar to that of Canadian company Eldorado Gold Group which is making efforts to start excavating in the Chalkidiki area but serious legal problems have arisen and have delayed works in the area. As for the Australian companies, they face certain problems since locals of Thrace are opposed to such gold exploitation by foreigners.

Commenting on the delays, Mr Hadjidakis stated earlier this year that the Greek government’s determination to support foreign investments in the country is pretty weak and it is delaying investments. But he also made clear that delays in gold investments in Chalkidiki were caused due to legal appeals by individuals and not so much government involvement.
