Australian Government Comes Closer to Greek Diaspora

The Australian government announced that July 6th is the final deadline for any individual willing to work for the Australian ministerial advisory committees. All candidates must be of Greek or foreign origin as the government’s purpose is to create a committee supporting Australia’s foreign communities.

According to a common announcement by the Immigration and Multicultural Affairs Ministry and the Greek-Australian MPs Maria Vamvakinou and Steve Georganas, the Greek committee will comprise 10 representatives of Greek communities. Those selected will have the necessary knowledge and active presence in their professional sectors. Co-presidents of the Greek committee will be both Greek MPs as well two members of Gillard government in order to fight for the interests of the Greek diaspora.

Mr Georganas commented that Maria Vamvakinou and himself will be the “connections between Greek Australians to PM and ministers.”

Moreover, Mrs Vamvakinou adds that “members of the committee will meet at least twice a year with the Minister of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs while once a year with the Australian PM.” She also expressed her wish that “Greek Australians will react to this invitation with great excitement.”
