Mayor in Australia Decides to Tax Fat

Steven Tsitas

Mayor of Darebin Steven Tsitas and the city council came up with an innovative idea, which may upset fast-food owners of the area. They decided to tax the fat and as a result, the taxes may be up to 400%.

Members of the council suggested that they should tax the restaurants, which serve foods with saturated fats, in order to increase their income. The rest members of the council replied positively to the suggestion, and now wait for the execution of the plan.

The local Municipality could use the money to help diabetes programs and inform citizens about how unhealthy this kind of food is.

Tsitas commented that “this is indeed, a pretty good suggestion, but there are some parameters we should take into consideration before implementing it.” “It is our responsibility to take care of our citizens’ welfare and this decision goes in this direction,” concluded the Mayor.
