Generous Greeks Make Donations to Support Hellenic Studies Abroad

Almost 10 years ago, the Greek Orthodox Community of Northern Australia donated 10,000 dollars to the Charles Darwin University, in order to promote Hellenic Studies abroad.

President of the Community John Nikolakis stated that this was an initiative, which began with great passion and continues until today, even more intensively.

“Our collaboration with the Flinders University of Southern Australia is the fundamental component for an ongoing development. Someday, we hope to have a Chair of Hellenic Studies at the Charles Darwin University,”added Nikolakis.

But Greeks never quit! So, the Committee of the Friends of Greek Language and Culture raised the extraordinary sum of 451,000 dollars to contribute to this purpose.

Modern Greek language studies will motivate Greeks of Darwin to come closer to their Greek origin, cultural tradition and their native language. Nowadays, about 400 people study at the Hellenic Studies Department of the Australian University.

Unfortunately, despite the generosity of the donors, 2-3 million dollars is still needed to create a Chair at the University.
