Businessman Calls on Greek-Australian Community to Send Greece Medical Aid

A pharmacist and businessman of Greek origin, who lives and works in Western Australia, is calling on the Greek Australian community to send medical aid to Greece.

Constantinos Berbatis is a lecturer at the Curtin University of Technology. A few days ago, he sent an email to the Consul of Greece in Perth Sophia Choli, encouraging her to take action.

“Greeks commit suicide and feel desperate because they can’t afford basic medical care,” said Berbatis to Neos Kosmos.

He also admits that charity goods can reach corrupt people, declaring he will make sure that “they will be handed over to the correct people.”

Responding to Berbatis’ email, the Greek Consul in Perth said, “[The] Greek government had not launched any sort of plea for the type of assistance you suggest.”

“We have a shortage of many medical materials. It may be cotton, wool today or syringes tomorrow, or even toilet paper,” declares Olga Kosmopoulou, employee at the Nikaia General Hospital in Athens.

The distinguished businessman said he would “like to be involved in giving [drug users] sterile needles and syringes, because what’s happening now is they’re starting to share their needles, and once you share needles, that’s an open gate to infection.”
