Melisma Ensemble is an all male vocal group made up of some of Sydney’s finest chanters trained in the vocal traditions of Byzantium (the Eastern Roman Empire). Melisma’s repertoire spans the breadth between music from the Byzantine Empire through Ottoman times up to modern compositions of this living tradition.
Weaving a tapestry of sound, with intricate vocals sweeping across the mosaic floors and sandstone walls of the crypt; Melisma is sure to embrace and soothe your sensibilities.
The choir is directed by Dimitri Koubaroulis, a chanter and former lambadarios (left chanter) of The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, who is dedicated to the preservation of the Art of Byzantine Chant and to its performance, promotion, archival and research. He holds a Byzantine Chant degree from the musical conservatory of Philippos Nakas and has sung in Byzantine choirs both in Greece and Australia. He formed Melisma Ensemble in early 2012 with the aim to bring the beauty of the Art of Byzantine Chant to a wide music appreciating audience.
