Greek-Australian Jenny Mikakos MP, Shadow Minister for Seniors and Aging (Member for northern Metropolitan, Victoria), attended a commemorative ceremony for the victims of the February 2009 bushfires at Flag Pole Hill, Flowerdale last Sunday.

The event was organized by the President of the Pontian Federation Panagia Soumela of Australia and New Zealand, Onoufrios Gorozidis. The ceremony involved the planting of an olive tree in memory of each of the bushfire victims.

The olive trees were selected as a symbol of strength, resilience and longevity.
