Greek Festival of Sydney Presents Photo Exhibition on Castellorizo

The 30th Greek Festival of Sydney presents the “An Island in Time: Castellorizo in Photographs, 1890-1948” exhibition at the Kudos Gallery with special guest MC John Mangos.

Largely drawn from the recent publication An Island in Time by Nicholas Pappas and Nicholas Bogiatzis (Halstead Press, 2010), the exhibition documents a lost community through its people, its places and its politics. Weddings, funerals and social gatherings are presented against a backdrop of more momentous events.

The island’s occupiers – Turks, French, Italians and British – are seen parading along the quay and around the town. Their periods of occupation brought policies and hostilities that transformed Castellorizo’s 19th-century grandeur into rubble.

The Kudos Gallery was formerly the Saint Sophia Hall, where Castellorizians attended Greek school classes from the late 1920s to the 1960s. Saint Sophia, the first Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Australia, consecrated in 1927, will be open for viewing.
