Sydney Calls on Greece to Grant Work-Holiday Visas

Australia intends to negiotiate with Greece over the possible agreement for working holiday visas granting.

The visas, according to the Australian Federal Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Chris Bowen, would be appropriate for young people between 18 and 30 who are willing to travel to each other’s country and stay there for a specific period of time, combining vacation with work.

The Greek Orthodox Community of New South Wales, Australia, visited the Minister the previous week at his office in Sydney in order to discuss the visa granting.

“The Minister was positive to this possibility and promised to get in touch with the Greek government in regards to this issue, as well,” said the President of the Community Harry Danalis.

“Australia has reached similar agreements with 15 more countries,” adds Danalis. He also commented that almost ten years ago, the working holiday visa was in the political limelight, but Greece had then disagreed on it – they wanted Greek citizens only to be able to travel to Australia, and not the opposite.

“Greeks did not accept the reciprocity of the agreement,” commented the Federal Minister, “but let’s hope that things will be different now.”
