Australian Prime Minister Gillard To Visit Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will reportedly visit Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during her one-week-long stay in neighboring Turkey. Australian media use the nickname “Green Patriarch” for the Orthodox Church leader as a result of his actions on environmental issues.

PM Gillard will be in Gallipoli on the occasion of the anniversary of Anzac Day, while her government plans an upgrade of World War I exhibits at the Australian War Memorial in the Australian capital. Gillard will join Australians travelling to Gallipoli to mark the 97th anniversary of the troop landings at Anzac Cove (1915). It will be Gillard’s first visit to Turkey as Prime Minister and the first visit to Gallipoli by an Australian PM since 2005.

After Gallipoli, she will visit Istanbul to meet with the Ecumenical Patriarch, and Ankara to have discussions on international and bilateral affairs with her Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan.

“Australia and Turkey are strengthening our cooperation on a range of significant international issues,” she said in a statement on Monday.
