Young Man Found Guilty of Expatriate’s Murder at Nightclub

Phillip Halipilias was a young Greek living in Australia who dreamt of becoming a famous DJ.  Callum Joseph Keys is also a young man living in Australia, who no longer has any dreams to look forward to.

On May 2, 2009 both boys attended the nightclub “Pit,” which is on the first floor of Alexandra Hills Hotel in Redland City. Keys, only 17 years old at the time, entered the club using a fake ID.

The club is popular with youth as well as police, as it is famous for fights as well. But that night, something more than just a boys’ fight took place; Keys stabbed Halipilias in the chest with a 10-centimetre-long knife and then returned to the dance floor.

The reason for the fight was that two groups, that of Keys’ and Halipilias’, confronted each other the previous week. Halipilias’ workmate Kyle Luke apporoached the Keys’ group in order to settle their differences. Luke’s twin brother had also been punched in the previous fight. They disagreed about who started the fight, and planned to confront each other later that night but a brawl erupted on the dance floor.

During the fight, Keys pulled out his knife and stabbed Halipilias to death. According to his confession, he had no such intention, except to just cut Halipilias’ arm.

Later on, after people ran to help try and stop the bleeding, underage Keys headed for the bathroom and hid the knife.

Brisbane’s Supreme Court found the defendant guilty on manslaughter charges and Keys was sentenced to life in jail.
