Sydney Honors 186th Anniversary of Heroic Exodus of Messolonghi

The Greek Association of Western Central Greece “Messolonghi” in Sydney honored the 186th Anniversary of the heroic Exodus of Messolonghi with a series of events held last weekend.

The first ceremony took place last Saturday in a well-known area of Kogarah, where dozens of Greeks living in the Australian city were found to commemorate the historic Exodus.

The president of the federation, Alexantonis Belehras, gave a speech on the historic details of the Exodus and the significance of the sacrifice of Greek fighters. He stressed that “the Exodus of Messolonghi signalizes a major moment of the Greek Independence War in 1821,” and reminded everyone of the positive effect the Greek fight has in European history.

Vasilios Tolios, General Consul of Greece in Sydney, Orthodox priest Christos Triantafilloullou representing Archbishop Stilianos, Greek Community NNO President Charis Danalis, and the Coordinator of SAE Australia George Aggelopoulos, spoke about “the loss that turned into a victory” and “became an inspiration for great Greek and foreign artists.”

The band “Belmore Greek Dancers” participated in the artistic part of the event, performing Greek traditional dances.

Three of the founding members of the Messolonghi Association in Sydney were honored for their valuable contribution by the Board of Managers. The Association was established in 1960 and has offered great cultural activities ever since.

The Board of Managers decided to honor members and executives that have contributed to the Association every year on the occasion of the Exodus anniversary.

The events went on until Palm Sunday, with a memorial service and a wreath placement in St. Pantes church in Belmore.
