The 30th Greek Festival of Sydney proudly presents “Memosinon”, a Phillip George exhibition on Herodotus’ globetrotting curiosity, collecting iconography, mapping culture, adding ideas and stories one upon another like a multi-layered transnational pastitsio baked in the oven of the diaspora.
Herodotus’ account of history was informed by the principle that everything is in eternal motion. He did not have the vantage point of an aerial perspective, no real maps to define where things were, just an awareness that we all have neighbours, and that our neighbours have neighbours. To find out what lay beyond the borderlands, his only guide was the word of his neighbour’s neighbour and so on.
