Greek Taxi Drivers’ Issue Explicitly Rejected by Australian Embassy to Greece

In a most explicit way the Australian Embassy to Athens rejected the recent reports featured in both the Australian and Greek press citing Greek-Australian cab owners launching an invitation to Greek taxi drivers to migrate to and work in Australia.

According to the Embassy’s announcement, the taxi driver profession is not included in the occupation demand list laid down by the current migration program of the Australian Government.

The Embassy also clarified that statements concerning the migration of Greek taxi drivers to Australia with a student visa are false, and that such visas are only issued to individuals who have been accepted and enrolled in a recognized program of studies in Australian universities.

Australian Ambassador to Greece, Mrs. Jenny Bloomfield, has also stated that the economic crisis plaguing Greece has been raising high expectations for Greeks in terms of seeking employment in Australia but the strict respective job requirements are not always being publicized or clarified.

Mrs. Bloomfield also dismissed the rumors of skyrocketing work visa applicants from Greece, since official data record the issuance of less than 15 work visas to Greek citizens within 2011.
