Australia Shocked By Riots in Athens As Politicians Pass Austerity Plan

The Australian media is extensively reporting on Greece as riots rage on the streets of Athens after Greek political leaders passed an austerity package to cut public spending, in the hope of saving Greece from default.

Australians are shocked by street battles between police firing rounds of tear gas and demonstrators hurling firebombs at Syntagma Square.

Treasurer Wayne Swan commented on the events unfolding in Greece.

“Scenes from the streets of Athens are very disturbing and while these measures are not popular, they are crucial if Greece is to get its budget back onto a sustainable footing,” he says.

“Swan emphasizes once again that the situation in Greece is a confronting reminder that the road to sustainable finances can be a painful one, and that European nations should waste no time in getting their fiscal houses in order”.

Finally, Australian Media such as “SBS”, “ABC” and “The Age” highlight the riots in Greek streets and the clashes between police and demonstrators in Athens due to the austerity vote.
