Greek Orthodox Priest To Give Evidence Regarding False Facebook Claims

The Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia has called on Greek priest Prokopios Kanavas on Tuesday to give evidence regarding certain allegedly false bits of information he had posted on his Facebook profile about himself.

According to Sunday Mail, Kanavas claimed to have completed a degree in theology and international law at Israel’s Hebrew University of Jerusalem, represented the Patriarchate of Jerusalem at conferences, and restored a monastery at his own expense.

The Israeli University did not confirm the Reverend’s claims of him studying there, while the Patriarchate of Jerusalem has also formally denied the two other claims.

The community is very deep in thought on whether Kanavas can continue his work for the parish after the year-by-year revelations about him.

Kanavas had already been once defrocked in 2008 after the Greek Orthodox patriarchate of Jerusalem had sent a letter with information on his past to the Archdiocese of SA.

After he had become a layperson in 2008, he had joined the Greek army and then another faction of the church before returning to Adelaide and getting ordained again in 2010, reports Sunday Mail.

He was also fired last year by the SA Police because of his lack of “suitability” for the job. The priest has made no comments yet.
