Sam Voutas, the Greek-Australian Film Director of China

Greek-Australian director Sam Voutas’s new film “Red Light Revolution” is being launched with a most impressive publicity campaign for its Chinese release.

Voutas was born in Melbourne but grew up living in different Asian cities, first in Manila, then in Taipei and from there on to Beijing, where he has been living and working for the past five years.

His new film has definitely been a big risk for him, since it revolves around the sensitive topic of sex-shops in China. The film has represented China in many international film festivals; it is the story of a cab driver who loses his job and wife in the same day, and finds the only way out is running the neighborhood’s sex shop. The elements of humor in the film focus on highlighting the conflict between the conservative Chinese culture and the impact of foreign customs and behaviors on tradition.

The Greek-Australian director recalls the first time he ever visited a sex-shop in Beijing, and believes that in the last years even the hard-core conservative culture system of China has been subjected to change and become more tolerant.  “The first time I entered a sex-shop in Beijing was in the mid ‘90s. It was a small shop that belonged to the state and it looked more like a school lab” said Voutas.

“Times have changed. That’s a fact. Ten years later, when we visited the Sexual Conference of Shanghai for our research, the whole situation reminded us more of Las Vegas. And that is when I started to realize how much money this type of business is worth” added Voutas.

Commenting on his script, Sam Voutas revealed that his Chinese language knowledge is not adequate enough to allow him to write a flawless script on his own. “I wrote the script in English and had one of my colleagues translate it to Chinese. Afterwards I worked on that with the actors, in order to form it the way I had imagined it”.
