Greek Steven Tsitas Elected New Mayor of Darebin

Darebin City Council has appointed a new Mayor for 2011-2012, Cr Steven Tsitas, in a Special Meeting of Council on Monday 5 December.

In his commencement speech, Darebin Mayor Cr Steven Tsitas said his appointment marked the first time an Australian of Greek heritage has been elected to the office of Mayor in the City of Darebin.

Cr Tsitas was first elected to Council in 1996. This is his first term as Mayor.

As Darebin’s newly elected Mayor, Cr Tsitas said there are four areas he wants to focus on in the year ahead: Sustainable Planning for the City’s future; Economic Management, including Municipal Rates Reform; Early Years Childhood Education, and; advocating important development opportunities.

Specifically, the new Mayor highlighted the Reservoir Structure Plan, Reservoir Library Redevelopment, and the Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre Redevelopment, as chief among these development opportunities.

“The aim of the redevelopment of the Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre is to create the largest arts centre precinct outside the CBD,” Cr Tsitas said.

“As Mayor I will engage in high level advocacy work with government and stakeholders to secure funding support for this signature project, as well as working with Council to guide its overall vision and execution,” he said.

Cr Tsitas concluded that he and his fellow councillors would continue to ensure that the council is transparent about all its plans and actions.
